A memorial celebration of the life of Reverend Darrell Darling will be held Saturday, May 7, at Lighthouse Field beginning at 3:00 pm with a reception following at the United Methodist Church, 250 California Street, Santa Cruz.

It is with profound regret that we acknowledge the passing of Reverend Darrell Darling, our long-time friend, fellow Executive Committee member of the NAACP, and civil rights activist. His stalwart, kind, and intelligent presence has provided unwavering support and direction in helping to build a Beloved Community in Santa Cruz.

Black Health Matters
Santa Cruz, Calif. – United Way and Applied Survey Research (ASR), together with the NAACP, Black Health Matters and the Santa Cruz County Black Coalition for Justice and Racial Equity Advisors, have just released a data snapshot addressing the health of Black/African American people in Santa Cruz County. “Making the Invisible Visible” includes local data that builds on the Community Assessment Project and shares data on the social determinants of health impacting this historically underserved population. These include economic stability; education; health and health care; neighborhood and the built environment; and social and community context. The data for local Black/African American residents are compared with that of the county’s Hispanic/Latino and White residents.
Eviction Prevention
The Economic Development Department of the City of Santa Cruz is partnering with Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County, Inc. (CAB) to market and administer an Emergency Eviction Prevention Program. The program is funded with HOME funding and CDBG-CV funding. Grant funds may be used to assist with payment of past due rent, incurred on or after April 1st, 2020. A maximum of two month’s assistance is available for those who need it and are eligible with a monthly limit not to exceed $2,500 or a total limit of $5,000 total per household. The emergency housing assistance will be paid directly to the landlord on behalf of the household.

Sheriff's Oversight Commission / AB 1185
In September 2020, AB 1185 – Sheriff’s Oversight Commission was signed into law. The law became effective on January 1, 2021. AB 1185 empowers California counties to institute a Sheriff Oversight Commission or Office of Inspector General, either by action of the board of supervisors or through a vote of county residents, “to assist in the board’s supervisorial duties over the sheriff.”
